ASX grains activity report

The Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) grains contract volume summaries for the past five weeks are listed below:

  1. Total of wheat and barley contracts, block trades and options for all trading months.
  2. ASX contract size is 20 metric tonnes

The new Eastern Australia wheat contract (code WM) launched in October 2015, superseding the NSW wheat contract (code VW) which will cease trading on 19 January 2017.

The Eastern Australia wheat contract expands the range of the geographic arc of delivery points to include Queensland and Victoria as well as NSW.

Some statistics over the life of the NSW wheat contract, which has traded over 40Mt equivalent since it launched in 2003:

Record day volume NSW wheat: 11,479 contracts on 7 November 2011

Record month volume NSW wheat: 51,249 contracts, November 2011

Record year volume NSW wheat: 330,472 contracts, 2012

Growers can talk to their marketing adviser about whether to include ASX in their wheat marketing strategy.  Access to ASX grain products is through a futures broker or an over-the-counter provider (such as a bank) handling swaps on ASX futures.
