SOUTH Australian grain producers and stakeholders in the industry supply chain are being urged to provide feedback on a draft SA Grain Sustainability Roadmap released this week.

Grain Producers SA commissioned experienced SA sustainability consultant Edge Impact to develop the draft roadmap for industry consideration.

As part of the next phase of the project, feedback is being sought and considered before the first-of-its kind roadmap is finalised and launched in SA.

GPSA chief executive officer Brad Perry said establishing the sustainability roadmap is about getting on the front foot as governments, consumers, financiers, and markets throughout the global supply chain are increasingly demanding credentialed sustainable grain.

“The demand for the grain industry in South Australia to reduce emissions and meet particular climate related targets continues, and will continue for years to come,” Mr Perry said.

“On behalf of South Australian grain producers, we want to be able to control our own destiny by better understanding our sustainability baseline and being able to provide evidence-based advocacy.

“In order for us to do that, we need to work together with industry to enhance our positioning and map out current challenges and opportunities when it comes to sustainability.

“We’ve commissioned Edge Impact, who also worked on the Emissions Reductions Roadmap for the Australian wine industry, to undertake a comprehensive process to draft a plan for consideration for the South Australian grain industry.

“GPSA is looking to not only better understand where we can provide education and support for producers to meet demands, but also communicate to the consumer the already well-established sustainability credentials of South Australian grain.”

GPSA is now looking to gather input and feedback from the wider South Australian grain producer community and key stakeholders on the draft Roadmap.

This project is supported by the South Australian Drought Resilience Adoption and Innovation Hub, one of eight hubs established across Australia through the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund.

The SA Drought Hub brings together primary producers, industry groups, researchers, government agencies, universities, agribusinesses, traditional owners and others to work towards a common vision to strengthen the drought resilience and preparedness of farms and regional communities in SA.
