Weekly rainfall update + rain outlook 18 August 2021

Grain Central August 18, 2021

RAINFALL for the week fell mainly in the south west and south east regions of the continent.

Cold fronts brought moderate falls to southern South Australia, Victoria, western Tasmania and parts of the New South Wales slopes and tablelands.

In the west, a pre-frontal trough moved across the west of Western Australia during the week, and a weak cold front passed over the far south-west of that state, bringing moderate falls.

Later in the week, two strong cold fronts tracked across south-west WA and generated thunderstorms, showers, and damaging winds to the area.

A moist onshore flow in eastern Australia produced light to moderate falls on the central and northern NSW coasts, and the south-east coast and north tropical coast of Queensland.

Past seven days: For the week to 10 August 2021, rainfall was recorded in the west Pilbara, Gascoyne coast, and the South West Land Division of Western Australia; south-eastern South Australia; southern, central and north-eastern Victoria; the South West Slopes and Central Tablelands districts, and north-east New South Wales; western Tasmania; and in parts of the North Tropical Coast and Capricornia districts, and south-east inland Queensland.

At the start of the week, a cold front moved across north-eastern New South Wales and south-eastern Queensland, while an associated low pressure system moved over Bass Strait and Tasmania then strengthened in the west Tasman Sea. Moderate rainfall was recorded about the southern coast, and in north-east Victoria, the South West Slopes and Northern Tablelands districts in New South Wales, and western Tasmania. Light falls were reported in southern South Australia, much of Victoria, and parts of eastern New South Wales.

During the middle of the week, westerly winds and an embedded weak cold front produced mostly light rainfall totals in southern South Australia, southern Victoria, and western Tasmania.

In the west, a pre-frontal trough moved across the west of Western Australia, and a weak cold front passed over the far south-west of that state. Moderate rainfall was recorded in south-western and eastern parts of the South West Land Division (SWLD). Light falls were recorded in the west Pilbara and Gascoyne districts.

In the last part of the week, two strong cold fronts tracked across south-west Western Australia and generated thunderstorms, showers, and damaging winds to the area. Moderate rainfall was recorded across the SWLD, and light rainfall was recorded in the west Pilbara and Gascoyne districts.

Moist onshore flow produced light to moderate rainfall totals from the central and northern New South Wales coasts, and the south-east coast and north tropical coast of Queensland.

Rainfall totals in excess of 50 mm to 100 mm were reported in south-west Western Australia, western Tasmania, and the far south of Victoria. The highest weekly rainfall total was 103 mm at Cowaramup at the South West District in Western Australia.

Rainfall totals between 10 mm and 50 mm were recorded across most of the South West Land Division, west Pilbara, southern Gascoyne coast and parts of the Goldfields district in Western Australia; south-eastern South Australia, and southern, central and north-eastern Victoria. Similar totals were recorded in western Tasmania; the South West Slopes, Central Tablelands, and north-eastern New South Wales, and an area in the southern Darling Downs, the Capricornia and North Tropical Coast of Queensland.
