Weekly rainfall update 3 December 2024 + outlook

Bureau of Meteorology December 3, 2024

EARLY in the week, severe thunderstorms and locally heavy rainfall were triggered by persistent low-pressure troughs.

They extended from the north of Western Australia, and through the interior into south-eastern Australia, before moving eastward over Queensland and New South Wales, leading to minor and moderate flood warnings issued for southern Qld and northern NSW.

A deep low-pressure system with an associated cold front and low-pressure trough on November 26 brought rain and widespread storms to central, southern and south-eastern areas of the country.

A low-pressure system and trough developed over south-eastern Australia on November 29 to December 2 bringing widespread rainfall and heavy falls across NSW, Victoria and Tasmania, leading localised flood warnings in Tas.

A cold front and low-pressure trough on December 1 moved across south-west Australia, bringing scattered rainfall and storms to WA, South Australia and the southern Northern Territory.

Weekly rainfall totals greater than 25mm were recorded for most of eastern and northern Australia and in parts of SA and southern WA.

Weekly rainfall totals of 50-100mm were recorded in areas of north-west WA, eastern and southern regions of Vic, and large parts of the NT, Qld, NSW, and Tas.

Weekly rainfall totals of more than 100mm were recorded in parts of south-eastern and central Qld, northern and south-eastern NSW, north-eastern Vic, northern Tas and the Top End of the NT.

The highest weekly total at a Bureau gauge was 316mm at Springbrook Road in Queensland, which included the highest daily total rainfall of 227mm in 24 hours to 9am on December 1.
