Weekly rainfall wrap + rain outlook, 14 Oct 2020

Bureau of Meteorology, October 14, 2020

A trough triggered thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in Darwin area in the Northern Territory, while a low pressure system and cold front brought widespread moderate falls in Victoria and Tasmania.

Past seven days: At the start of the week, a trough and associated cloudband extended from the Top End to central and south-east Australia, producing widespread rainfall in the Northern Territory, South Australia, and western New South Wales. In the west, a cold front produced light to moderate falls in the far south-west Western Australia.

A trough along the north-west tropical coast triggered thunderstorms and localised heavy falls around Darwin, with moderate falls in the Kimberley in Western Australia.

A low pressure system developed in eastern South Australia and deepened as it moved east over western and southern Victoria. The associated cold front moved across the south-east mainland. Rainfall was recorded in the south-east South Australia, spreading to Victoria, southern New South Wales and northern Tasmania.

During the middle part of the week, the low tracked south through the Bass Strait and Tasmania. Rain continued in southern and central Victoria and into the New South Wales alpine region. There were widespread moderate falls in Tasmania.

At the end of the week, a trough in inland Queensland produced light to moderate rainfall in the state’s central-west. A north-westerly flow produced light falls in western Tasmania.

Weekly rainfall totals exceeding 100 mm were recorded in and around Darwin in the Northern Territory, in the north-east and southern Gippsland in Victoria, and spots along the east coast Tasmania and in the New South Wales alpine region. The highest weekly total was 186.2 mm at Gray on the east coast of Tasmania.

Weekly rainfall totals exceeding 50 mm were recorded in the South West, North East and South Gippsland Districts in Victoria, the Snowy Maintains and South Coast Districts in New South Wales, the West, Central Plateau and East Coast Districts in Tasmania, and areas in the western Top End in the Northern Territory and eastern South Australia.
