Past seven days: At the start of the week, a tropical low which previously had tracked through the Kimberley and Pilbara, was located inland near the north-west Gascoyne coast in Western Australia, embedded on a surface trough. The surface trough extended along the north-west Western Australia, across the Top End of the Northern Territory to the Cape York Peninsula, while a surface trough developed near the west coast. Another surface trough stretched from north-west to south-east Queensland.
The low near the Gascoyne coast remained near-stationary before moving to waters west of Carnarvon, with a surface trough extending north-west into the Indian Ocean dragging moisture over the mainland. Showers and thunderstorms produced locally heavy falls in the Gascoyne District, and moderate falls in the Goldfields District and parts of the northern South West Land Division. Showers and thunderstorms developed in the Kimberley, parts of the Top End and the Cape York Peninsula. Thunderstorms produced moderate falls in north-west, central and south-east Queensland, associated with the surface trough through inland Queensland. The low on the Gascoyne coast continued to generate moderate falls over the Gascoyne and Pilbara coasts as it lingered until the middle of the week.
A complex low pressure system, cold front and pre-frontal trough tracked over Victoria and Tasmania around the middle of the week, and the systems generated widespread moderate falls. Daily rainfall totals in excess of 100 mm were recorded in parts of north-west Tasmania, north-east Victoria and south-east New South Wales on the 6th. Moderate falls were recorded across Tasmania, the eastern half of Victoria, from south-east to northern inland New South Wales, and western Queensland. The complex low moved off the east coast of Tasmania, and a surface trough extended from the central coast of New South Wales to the Gulf Country. Showers and thunderstorms developed over central to north-east New South Wales, southern inland Queensland and across the Gulf Country and northern half of the Northern Territory.
In the west, from the middle of the week, the tropical low moved south slowly along the west coast of Western Australia. Moderate falls were recorded to western half and southern parts of the state from the Pilbara, Gascoyne to much of the South West Land Division, and Goldfields. Some places in far south-west Western Australia reported daily rainfall totals over 50 mm on the 8th. At the end of the week, thunderstorms and showers continued to produce moderate falls across the northern tropics, and in parts of central Queensland and the Capricornia coast.
Rainfall totals in excess of 200 mm were reported across the western Gascoyne in Western Australia, and in small areas in the north of the Northern Territory. The highest weekly total was 311 mm at Nathan River in the Roper–Mcarthur District in the Northern Territory.
Rainfall totals in excess of 100 mm were reported in the western Gascoyne, western Pilbara, parts of the east Kimberley and across large parts of the Top End in the Northern Territory; also areas in northern Queensland, south-east New South Wales, north-east Victoria and north-western Tasmania.
Rainfall totals between 50 mm and 100 mm were recorded from the western Pilbara to areas in the south-west, including areas of the South West Land Division. Similar totals were recorded in the east Kimberley and much of the northern half of the Northern Territory, the Gulf Country and Cape York Peninsula, parts of central and south-west Queensland, through central New South Wales, north-east Victoria and most of western Tasmania.
Rainfall totals between 10 mm and 50 mm were recording across the north, west, interior parts, and the south of Western Australia; across most of the Northern Territory except the south-east; southern South Australia; most of Queensland except areas through the south-east and southern interior; central to eastern New South Wales; most of Victoria except in the north-west, and Tasmania.
