A MAN was airlifted to Roma Hospital yesterday afternoon after becoming trapped in a silo containing fertiliser on a farm in Eurombah, around 120km north-east of Roma.
Emergency crews were called to the property shortly before 1.30pm after reports a man had fallen into a silo and become trapped.
It is believed the silo was filled with urea, which came up to the man’s neck.
Four Queensland Fire Department crews worked to manually remove fertiliser from the silo before securing the man in a harness and safely extricating him from the structure.
A spokesperson for the Queensland Ambulance Service said the extraction process was “prolonged”.
“The patient, a man in his 80s, was assessed by paramedics and airlifted in a stable condition to Roma Hospital,” the spokesperson said.
“He had a pretty good support system there for him, so he escaped quite well thankfully.”
The LifeFlight critical care doctor and flight paramedic also assisted local QAS paramedics to treat the patient, who sustained minor injuries.
Qld farm safety campaign
The incident comes days after the Qld Government launched a farm-safety campaign aimed at raising awareness around the potential safety hazards on farms and throughout rural communities.
The campaign features a far- safety calendar competition open to all Qld school students from Prep to Year 6.
Launching the competition, Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning and Minister for Industrial Relations Jarrod Bleijie said it was important for people of all ages to be reminded of the importance of farm safety.
“Raising awareness among primary school students and their communities about common safety hazards on farms and in rural settings is an ongoing campaign,” Mr Bleijie said.
“Tragically, in the last year alone, 26 Queenslanders lost their lives simply going to work.
“These aren’t just numbers—they’re 26 families left without a chance to say goodbye.
“The rural sector alone accounted for 10 of those lives.
“Our government backs our agricultural sector to continue to grow the economic output and that also means supporting safe and productive farming workplaces as well.”
