A ROAD and a rail line near the Eyre Peninsula town of Ceduna in South Australia remain closed after Tuesday’s collision involving a grain truck and a train.

The incident occurred at around 2.15pm local time, when an Aurizon train and the road vehicle met at a level crossing.

Emergency services attended the scene.

“The safety and wellbeing of those involved remain our priority,” Aurizon said in a statement.

“The train crew and the occupant of the road vehicle did not suffer any serious injuries.

Aurizon said damage to rollingstock and rail infrastructure was sustained as a result of the incident.

The narrow-gauge line is used to haul gypsum roughly 60km from the Kevin Mine, Australia’s largest gypsum mine, at Lake MacDonnell, west of Ceduna.

The mine is owned and operated by Gypsum Resources Ausralia, a joint venture between Knauf Gypsum and CSR, and the gypsum is shipped to Australia and New Zealand ports, primarily to make plasterboard and cement.

“The rail line is currently closed while assessment, recovery and repair activities continue,” Aurizon said in its statement.

“Aurizon is undertaking an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and is cooperating with the relevant authorities.”

Aurizon said a timeframe for the resumption of services will be determined as recovery works progress.

SA Police is investigating the incident, and has advised that Goode Road and its continuation Otc Road remain closed between Schwarz Street and Tradings Stock Route.

SA Police has today advised its investigation is ongoing and no charges have been laid as yet.

“The area will remain affected for several days at least,” SA Police said in a statement.
