FARM owners and managers are being asked to complete a Grain Producers Australia online survey to help build a picture of grower use and understanding of autonomous farm machinery.
The survey has been designed to take no longer than 8 minutes, and can be completed on a computer or mobile device.
In Australia, growers are increasingly using technology such as auto-steer, auto shut-off, section control, and robotics to mow, slash, and sense and spot-spray weeds.
The survey will provide an insight into what types of autonomous machinery farm owners or managers may use or be aware of, and their interest in learning more.
It is a key initiative in the joint program of GPA, the Tractor and Machinery Association of Australia and the Society of Precision Agriculture Australia which is committed to guiding the safe and effective adoption of autonomous farm machinery in Australia.
Since 20-19, the three organisations have jointly developed the Code of Practice for Agricultural Mobile Field Machinery with Autonomous Functions in Australia.
Earlier this year, the program was extended for a further three years to support the code’s implementation as one owned and driven by industry to achieve common goals.
“The first stage of this work was developing the code of practice, which outlines roles and responsibilities for everyone along the network, from designers to owners and operators,” GPA southern region director and RD&E spokesperson Andrew Weidemann said.
“Now we’re working to understand how our industry can move towards using the technology on their own terms and with their needs in mind.
Mr Weidemann said he encouraged those with interest in this space, whether they were already using the technology or not, to participate in the survey and help drive this industry-owned and led initiative for the benefit of Australian agriculture.
