AUSTRALIA exported 1,410,241 tonnes of wheat and 20t of durum in April, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The total figure is down 29 percent from the 1,996,348t, including 31,500t of durum, shipped in March.

In containerised sales, Taiwan on 24,651t, followed by The Philippines on 22,703t, and Thailand on 20,718t were the three biggest markets for April shipment.

In bulk, China on 123,345t made a surprise return to the top three, behind The Philippines on 297,421t and Indonesia on 257,624t.

The April 2026 figure is down 45pc from the 2,585,188t shipped in April 2025.

In the USDA’s World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates out overnight, the forecast for the Australian wheat crop now being planted has been cut by 2 million tonnes (Mt) to 28Mt, and exports by 1Mt to 22Mt.

This compares with USDA’s estimates for Australia’s current crop of 36Mt,  and exports of 25Mt.

In the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service June Grain: World Markets and Trade report, also out overnight, a lift in global wheat production has been forecast, with upward revisions for Russia, Türkiye, and Ukraine, partially offset by reduced forecasts for Australia, Pakistan, and the US.

Global production is still expected to be down 3pc from the prior year.

Consumption is expected to expand with more feed and residual use this month, especially in Russia.

Trade is forecast down 6pc from the prior year,  with reduced exports expected from Australia and lower imports for Türkiye, Morocco, and Nigeria.
