AUSTRALIA exported 17,884 tonnes of chickpeas and 69,328t of lentils in August, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
India on 8037t was the biggest market for August-shipped chickpeas, followed by Pakistan on 2199t and Nepal on 1966t.
India on 36,143t was also the biggest market for August-shipped lentils, followed by Bangladesh on 14,146t and Pakistan on 7098t.
Chickpea volume posted an unexpected rise over August, being up 35 percent from the July total of 13,233t.
The jump is ostensibly attributable to traders and growers wanting to clear out chickpea stocks ahead of the big new crop now being harvested in Queensland.
On lentils, August volume was down 43pc from the July total to reflect the usual rundown on current crop, and also the impact of Canada’s new crop hitting the global market.

Keen to see how many organic chickpeas are exported currently (or any demand for them). Great data here – good work GC and ABS.
ABS data does not differentiate between organic and otherwise. My understanding is the small amount of organic chickpeas grown in Australia are sold into the domestic market. Regards, Liz Wells, editor
