AUSTRALIA exported 459,973 tonnes of canola in January, up 172 per cent from 168,925t in December, according to the latest export data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
The lift reflects strong demand from European crushers, who have had access to much less locally produced rapeseed than normal because of hot and dry conditions in Europe last year.
Western Australia has exported nearly all of Australia’s current-crop canola to date, as drought in New South Wales, normally Australia’s second-biggest canola-growing state, cut its current-crop production to around 140,000t, compared with the bumper crop seen in 2016 of more than 800,000t.
