December chickpea exports at 58,604t up 46pc over month

AUSTRALIA exported 58,604 tonnes of chickpeas in December, up 46 per cent from the November figure of 40,027t, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Bangladesh was Australia’s biggest customer for the third consecutive month, and took 35,555t of bulk chickpeas, the second-highest figure for 2019 behind only February, when Australia shipped 39,960t to Bangladesh.

Pakistan’s buying of containerised Australian chickpeas continued through December, with 12,570t purchased, in line with volume purchased in the previous two months, to make it the second-biggest market for the quarter.

The United Arab Emirates has also provided support, and continued its run as the third-biggest buyer over December, and for the quarter.
