SIX Hard milling varieties, two Australian Noodle Wheat varieties and one feed variety have been added to the national Wheat Variety Master List, which comes into effect tomorrow.

“The 2026-2027 Wheat Variety Master List is published as part of ongoing efforts to support the global competitiveness of Australian wheat and uphold the quality standards required by the industry,” Grains Australia classification general manager Dr Megan Sheehy said.

“Grains Australia continues to work closely with our Wheat Council and industry to ensure the delivery of a market-driven variety classification system that meets customer requirements while supporting grower profitability.”

The new varieties are:

• AGT-Agile: Very slow-maturing APH wheat suited for Queensland and northern New South Wales;
• AGT-Glamour CL Plus: Slow-maturing APH Clearfield wheat for NSW and Qld;
• AGT-Trigg: Quick-maturing AH wheat suited to main-season planting for Western Australia;
• IG Collie: ANW suited to early sowing in WA;
• IG Quokka: Mid-maturity ANW suited to WA;
• Kestrel: Very quick maturing InterGrain AH wheat suited to WA;
• CSIRO-LRPB Hurdle: AH main-season wheat for WA, South Australia, and Victoria;
• LRPB Packer: AH wheat suited to early sowing in SA, Vic, and southern NSW;
• AGF Seeds Ultim8: Red wheat for high-rainfall areas.

Variety upgrades by zone include:

• Western: AGT Colt and Sunmaster to AH;
• Southern: LRPB Optimus, LRPB SONIC, and Mowhawk to AH;
• South Eastern: AGT Colt, AGT Hamelin; Dale, RGT Healy and RGT Ponsford to AH; AGT Kudos to APH; and,
• Northern: AGT Colt to AH.

Having first been flagged for removal in 2024 and delivered in existing classes up until 2025, and after consultation with industry,the following 11 varieties have been removed from the 2026-2027 Wheat Variety Master List:

• Axe;
• EGA Kidman;
• Espada;
• Fortune;
• Gladius;
• Hyperno;
• LRPB Crusader;
• LRPB Lincoln;
• Manning;
• Scenario; and,
• SF Adagio.

Based on decreasing production thresholds, the five following varieties are planned for removal in 2027:

• Harper;
• King Rock;
• Kiora;
• LRPB Viking; and,
• Mitch.

The 15 varieties planned for removal in 2028 are:

• Impress CL Plus;
• Hydra;
• Cosmick;
• Sunlamb;
• Hatchet CL Plus;
• Bremer;
• DS Newton;
• DS Darwin;
• Heckto;
• Ovalo;
• Jade;
• Tenfour;
• B53;
• Yitpi; and,
• Chara.

The Wheat Variety Master List contains the names of all current varieties approved by Australia’s wheat classification process managed by Grains Australia, along with all listed feed varieties.

The list records the highest possible class available for respective zones, noting that the varieties are then subject to each season’s Grain Trade Australia Wheat Standards upon delivery.
