THE ORD River District Co-operative has been named as one of eight recipients of the Western Australian Government’s third round of Value Add Investment Grants.

It entitles the Kununurra business known as ORDCO to $750,000, which the WA Government in a statement said will be used to upgrade its stockfeed plant as the Kimberley Cotton Company’s gin comes online this year.

The gin will make cottonseed locally available in the Ord for the first time since the 1970s.

“The project will help ORDCO to expand its offerings of blended grain rations and increase the plant’s production to 25,000 tonnes per year,” the statement said.

“This will build resilience in the northern cattle industry, as well as create four new jobs and opportunities for local businesses during the construction phase.”

On January 16, WA’s Cook Government announced all recipients of the latest VAIG round , totalling $7.08 million, ahead of the WA State General Election on March 8.

Among the other seven recipients was Kojonup Feeds, as earlier announced.

Other grants were:

  • $1M for Mt Barker Chicken to upgrade its processing facility and increase capacity;
  • $1M for D’Orsogna to upgrade and expand processing and packaging facilities for meat products;
  • $1M for AAA Egg Company to modernise processing equipment for value-added products;
  • $1M for Bidyadanga Aboriginal Community to expand cool storage for melons;
  • $1M Foodfolk Australia to relocated and upgrade its ready-made food facility; and,
  • $580,000 for Forest Hill Wines to upgrade its bottling line.
